Parasailing has come a long way since the 1960's when Pierre Lamoigne attached an already-existing parachute to a car as a cheap way of teaching parachuting.

The sport took off in the mid-1970's when a special boat was designed with a winch and built-in take-off platform for the flyer.

Last week, tourists and local residents alike seemed to enjoy hanging on a tow line 400 to 800 feet above East Bay, a parachute strapped to each of their backs as they were towed behind a boat at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

"There is nothing like it," agreed Gaylee and Jan Lautner, of St. Louis, Mo.

Capt. Saburi Boyer, owner of Traverse Bay Parasail, got into the business seven years ago when he started working on a tow boat.

Today he and his wife are the owners of the company.

"I enjoy what I do;" he said. "what else could one ask for?"
